- December 2018 - Akihabara, Tokyo Japan - Steins;Gate -
Here is the start of my pilgrimage hunt series. Whenever I visit Japan during vacations one thing I like to do is find locations referenced in anime. So i'll start off with one of my favourite series: Steins;Gate.
Before embarking I did some research and grabbed screenshots from both the visual novel and anime of both Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0. During my trip in 2018 we went to akihabara twice. The first day arouund the afternoon just to shop, and if I pass by some locations I took a picture. But the main bulk of the pictures came from the second visit, early in the morning till the shops have not opened yet. We went really early because the flight back home is in the afternoon, also as nothings open yet theres no crowd, and I get to take pictures of the empty streets.
Up at Crossfield link bridge is really windy. Here I took 2 positions for the anime and visual novel.
Similar heres the coinlocker.
Near BIC CAMERA Akiba, this was taken in the afternoon,
Next is the most iconic building of the show, Radio Kaikan. Compared to the year the Series started the building underwent renovation so it looks different and taller than whats depicted in the anime. I heard when the anime was airing they installed a crashed satellite on the building.
Back in 2018 they had Steins;Gate 0 themed vending machine selling water bottles.
My most recent visit in 2023 they have other Steins;Gate themed food, such as a gelbanana whip cream dessert, and Mayushi slap energy drink. All these can be found in the building first and top floor.
Mayushii Slap Energy Drink.
The beef rice shop, unfortunately it does not open that early in the morning as well
Final stop is Mailish Cafe, aka MayQueen NyanNyan. In 2018 It was still closed when I visited so I didn't get to go in....
....however I did manage to pay a visit in 2023.
There were lots of posters paste on the staircase walls
The cafe had a no photography rule so I wasn't able to take pictures of all the Steins;Gate and Science Adventure goods on display, but I was allowed to take picture of the food. We sat at the table where Okabe and Daru sat.
Apart from their normal menu, you can order Steins;Gate themed food and character drinks. You can ask them to write "sekai ga yabai" on your omu rice.
Overall the Maids were very friendly, you can interact and chat with them however I was awkward back then, maybe next time. Like other maid cafes you can get a picture with them with a small fee. Theres also a stamp collection card, where you can redeem a gift if you complete the card.
Regarding finding all these locations, theres this really cool pilgirmage map which marks down the locations of every Science Adventure series, which I believed is being managed by @Kagaku_inform on Twitter / X.
